Volunteering with the SPCA
Volunteers are an important part of Red Deer & District SPCA. We need volunteers to help with our events and also to assist with everyday operations. All of the volunteer positions we have are important to us and especially to the animals. It is critical for the animals to have the love, affection, exercise, and socialization they deserve.
By volunteering at Red Deer & District SPCA, you can add to the quality of animals' lives and enhance the quality of your life too! As the largest animal welfare organization in central Alberta, we rely on the assistance of volunteers to care for the many animals that are in our care. Our beautiful new center allows us to provide a wonderful environment for our guest pets and the volunteers who interact with them.
Volunteer Requirements
Volunteers must be at least sixteen years old to volunteer in Red Deer & Distinct SPCA’s Humane Education and Animal Welfare Center. We recognize that many motivated young people are excited to give some of their time to the animals. Youth are encouraged to volunteer at our fundraising event or to introduce the Pennies for Paws to their school. For more information on the Pennies for Paws program, please click here.
Most of our volunteer opportunities require a minimum time commitment. This commitment varies based on the program; however most animal enrichment programs require a minimum of two hours each week. Volunteers are welcomed and encouraged to give more time than the minimum requirement. Our center is open every day, year round for our volunteers.
Volunteers must attend an orientation and program specific training prior to volunteering. If an applicant is under 18, we require his/her parent or guardian’s authorization to enrol in the program.
Becoming a Volunteer
Anyone interested in volunteering with Red Deer & District SPCA is invited to complete a volunteer application form and waivers. Only fully completed applications (including all personal information, availability, preferences, signatures and waivers) will be processed. Incomplete applications will be destroyed!
When the application is completed, please return it to the front desk at our Humane Education and Animal Welfare Center. You will be contacted when a volunteer opportunity meeting your availability and preferences is available. Some volunteer positions are in high demand and therefore submission of an application does not guarantee placement.
