Red Deer & District SPCA

Red Deer & District SPCA is commonly confused with several other organizations. However, RED DEER & DISTRICT SPCA OPERATES INDEPENDENTLY OF ALL OTHER ANIMAL ORGANIZATIONS AND HUMANE SOCIETIES. We accept stray animals from the City of Red Deer and Central Alberta. Owner surrendered animals are accepted only if we have room, unless said animal is deemed to be at risk.

A brief summary of each organization’s area of responsibility is shown below:

RED DEER & DISTRICT SPCA

• Operates an animal adoption centre for Red Deer and Central Alberta
• Accepts stray animals from the City of Red Deer and surrounding areas (east to Stettler, west to Rocky Mountain House, north to Camrose and south to Olds)
• Accepts owner surrender animals if room is available, unless said animal is deemed to be at risk
• Provides care for companion animals that are seized by the Alberta SPCA
• The animals that are admitted to Alberta Animal Services are not transferred to Red Deer & District SPCA
• The animals that are admitted to Red Deer & District SPCA are not transferred to Alberta Animal Services

THE ALBERTA SPCA

• Does not operate an animal adoption centre
• Handles abuse and neglect cases in areas of Alberta other than Edmonton and Calgary
• Enforces animal protection laws in areas of Alberta other than Edmonton and Calgary

ALBERTA ANIMAL SERVICES

• Enforces the City of Red Deer’s animal bylaws
• Does not transfer animals to Red Deer & District SPCA
• Does not take animals from Red Deer & District SPCA

CANADIAN FEDERATION OF HUMANE SOCIETIES

• Acts as an information source and provides a membership program to many humane societies across the Canada
• Red Deer & District SPCA is a member of the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies

OTHER HUMANE SOCIETIES & SPCAs CALLED “CANADIAN” OR HAVING THE WORD “CANADA” IN ITS NAME

There are other humane societies and SPCAs called “Canadian” or having the word “Canada” in their names. Some of these organizations mail donation requests to people across the country, and often people assume the Red Deer & District SPCA is affiliated with these organizations. Please be aware that Red Deer & District SPCA is not affiliated with any other organization and does not receive any part of donations sent to these organizations.
