When the doctor here was doing my spay, it was discovered that I have what’s suspected to be a portosystemic shunt in my intestines. Confusing, I know. Basically, this is an abnormal blood vessel that prevents my liver from functioning properly, and it’s possible I may have a shorter life span. I’m not experiencing any symptoms at this time, and with proper medical management, including being fed a low protein diet and supplements such as lactulose and antacids, I could remain that way for some time. It is likely, however that over time I could begin to suffer from liver disease, and any potential adopters need to be aware of this. Discussing my situation and possible options with your vet before you adopt me would be a really great idea, and the staff here will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have.
